Jean Taylor Powers, 89, of Darvills, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
A passionate and generous musician, wonderful mother and caring friend beloved by many, Jean is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Taylor Powers (Margaret Stuart Stringfellow-Carter) of Blackstone and Richmond; Kirk Lewis Powers of Powhatan; her lifetime best friend Geraldine Miller-Snyder of Roanoke; brother Charles Henry Taylor, Jr. (David Deberry) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; nieces Alice Gail Matthews (Kevin) and Leslie Jean Goodrich (Ronnie) of Wakefield; and brother-in-law Robert Burgess of Wakefield. She also leaves one aunt, Essie Taylor Bickings, many cousins and dear friends.
Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, John Lewis (Jack) Powers, father Charles Henry Taylor and mother Claudene Breedlove Taylor; sister Judy Taylor Burgess, and parents in-law Lewis John and Mary Harvey Powers.
Jean shared her musical gifts as an organist and pianist at many churches for over 70 years. She was a devoted member of Butterwood United Methodist Church and Crenshaw United Methodist Church and provided countless hours of musical joy to their congregations.
Born in Blackstone, Jean moved to Vinton as a child with her parents, where she graduated from William Byrd High School and made many life-long friends.
The Powers family wishes to thank the many healthcare professionals and caregivers for their compassionate care during her long illness. The family also especially thanks Wallace and Becky Hudson, Jimmy and Mimi Maitland, and Anita Drumgoole for their steadfast devotion to Jean.
A memorial service will be held at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 200 Church Street, Blackstone, VA on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception immediately following in the fellowship hall. A graveside service at Butterwood United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2411 Darvills Road, Blackstone, VA will be held at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Butterwood United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Jimmy Maitland, 6967 Grubby Road, Wilsons, Va 23894 or Crenshaw United Methodist Church Music Fund. Arrangements are by the Blackstone Chapel of Joseph McMillian Funeral Homes.
